How does the NDIS cover gardening, cleaning and maintenance work? 

We are often asked whether the NDIS can fund these items… The short answer is yes, however there are a few points to note:

• Generally, if you are unable to do home maintenance, cleaning, or gardening tasks because of your disability, it’s likely to be considered reasonable and necessary and you can use your NDIS funding for this purpose.
• If you live with others, the NDIS would only consider it reasonable and necessary to fund the cleaning/ maintenance of your space. This means that a service provider could help you with your personal space or bedroom but not for any common spaces.
• Support workers can be a great resource for assisting you with household activities.

• This support is considered a CORE support. You need to have CORE – Assistance with Daily Life, Support Category Code 01 in your budget. This support category is designed to help people with daily tasks.

• Most gardeners and cleaners are likely to be unregistered with the NDIS, so you’ll need to either have plan management or self manage your NDIS funds to access them.

• These support workers charge an hourly rate. If there are additional costs, they must include this in the hourly rate.The NDIS will pay up to – $50.87 (including GST) per hour for Performing essential house and/or yard activities that the participant is not able to undertake.The NDIS will pay up to – $51.81 (including GST) per hour for Performing essential house cleaning activities that the participant is not able to undertake.

• It is a good idea to get a few quotes first to make sure they are charging a reasonable amount.

• Setting up a service agreement between yourself and the provider is a great way to make sure you agree on the rates and terms and so you can keep track of you NDIS funds.
