Inclusion Matters: Creating a Workplace Where Everyone Belongs

At Auscare Support, inclusion is not a policy tucked away in a handbook. It is part of who we are.

As part of our “Inclusion Matters Initiative”, we are taking the opportunity to reflect on what true workplace inclusion looks like and why it matters so much, not only for our team, but for the people we support every day.

For us, inclusion means creating a workplace where every person feels valued, respected, heard and empowered to do their best work. It means recognising that every individual brings unique strengths, experiences and perspectives that make our organisation stronger.

Many members of the Auscare team have lived experience of disability, either personally or through caring for a loved one. That lived experience is one of our greatest strengths. It brings empathy, understanding, creativity and insight that simply cannot be taught in a training session.

We also recognise that everyone experiences work differently. Some people may benefit from flexible hours, specialised equipment, modified workspaces, additional breaks, assistive technology or adjustments to the way they communicate or learn. At Auscare, making reasonable workplace adjustments is not viewed as an inconvenience. It is simply the right thing to do.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to come to work feeling safe, comfortable and supported.

When people have the tools and flexibility they need to succeed, they are able to focus on what matters most—making a positive difference in the lives of the participants we support.

Creating an inclusive workplace is not about treating everyone the same. It is about recognising that fairness sometimes means providing different supports so that everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive.

This philosophy mirrors everything we believe about disability support.

Every day, our Support Coordinators advocate for participants to receive the individualised supports they need to achieve their goals. It only makes sense that we apply those same principles within our own workplace.

Inclusion also benefits our entire organisation.

When people feel accepted and valued for who they are, they are more engaged, more confident and more willing to contribute ideas. Diverse teams solve problems more effectively, innovate more readily and build stronger relationships with colleagues and participants alike.

Most importantly, inclusion creates belonging.

Belonging is that feeling of knowing you can be yourself without fear of judgement. It is knowing your voice matters. It is knowing that if you need support, your workplace will stand beside you.

That is the culture we continue to build at Auscare.

Our Inclusion Matters Initiative is a reminder that inclusion is everyone’s responsibility. It is reflected in the conversations we have, the adjustments we make, the respect we show one another and the way we celebrate our differences.

Because when our people feel supported, they are better able to support others.

Together, we are creating a workplace where everyone belongs, everyone is valued, and everyone has the opportunity to flourish.

“Because at Auscare Support, inclusion is not just something we believe in. It is something we live every single day.”
